Govt has failed to tackle water

and power crisis: Manzur

The Communist Party of Bangladesh president, Manzurul Ahsan Khan said the government had failed to take short- and long-term measures to resolve the crisis of water, power, gas, price hike of essentials and traffic congestions in the city.

He was addressing a party rally, on April 3, 2010, chaired by Abdul Kader, at Muktangan in the city to press for implementation of the party's 12-point charter of demands.

The CPB President said the government was patronising the rich, protecting corrupt elements, tender manipulators and extortionists and had made people's life miserable.

'The government has surrendered to the syndicates involved in price hike, instead of introducing rations for the low income group,' Manzurul Ahsan Khan said.
He accused the government of not taking initiatives to extract gas from new gas fields or exploring new fields. He also said the long- and short-term plans for power generation fell flat for plots of bureaucracy.

He said the government which failed to resolve the daily crisis of the people had no right to stay in power.

The party presidium member Haider Akbar Khan Rano, Dhaka Committee general secretary Ahsan Habib Lablu, party leaders Zahid Hossain Khan, Jolly Talukder and Kartik Chakravarti also addressed the rally.

Leaders of the unified party called for launching a common platform of the left and democratic political forces.

The CPB central committee elected Haider Akbar Khan Rano as a presidium member and Mohammad Habibur Rahman and Shahrier Mohammad Firoj as central committee members of the party.

The joint declaration was read out by general secretary of the CPB, Mujahidul Islam Selim, which said the political parties serving the interests of big bourgeoisie had failed to solve the problems of the people.

Unity of left political parties is the aspiration of the people who look forward to a left alternative force to address the crisis facing the country.
The unified party will work for strengthening the left alternative political force and also for formation of a common platform of the left and democratic political parties, the joint declaration said.

Alert to the Ill-motive of a communal

Forces on Tipaimukh issue  : CPB

The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) called upon the people of the country to remain alert to the ill-motive of a communal and militant quarter in the name of bringing out a long march on the issue of Tipaimukh dam of India.

In a statement on 25 December, CPB president Manjurul Ahsan Khan and general secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim said a communal quarter had announced a three-day programme in the name of long march. But, they said the statements made from the rally at Muktangan on Thursday on the issue of Tipaimukh dam exposed that their aim was to raise mainly communal slogans in the name of anti-India campaign. "Such a programme is being observed with a bad political intention," the CPB leaders said.

The CPB leaders added that they had chosen such a path frantically in self-defence at a time when the demands for immediate execution of the verdict in Bangabandhu Murder Case and the trial of war criminals had already gained popularity.
"In the real sense of the term, there is no link between the long march and the Tipaimukh dam issue," they said alleging that their main objective is to mislead the people and reap political benefits by creating communal tension.
The CPB leaders said that the left-leaning political parties including the CPB and the progressive and patriotic forces had long been in the movement pressing for a halt to construction of the Tipaimukh dam.

"The long march of the communal forces would weaken the people's movement," they said calling upon the people not to fall in the trap of political touts and carry forward the real movement for stopping construction of the Tipaimukh dam.

The Local leaders leaders at a press conference held at Chittagong Press Club also put up several other demands, including immediate introduction of set of rules for developing ship-breaking yards of international standards in a planned way without harming the coastal green belt.

At the press conference they said the coastal embankment and forest belt that started developing following cyclonic storms and tidal upsurge of 1960 and 1970 saved lives and properties at north Sitakunda during the cyclonic storm of 1991.

CPB concerned over visit by US military officers

The Communist Party of Bangladesh on expressed concern over the proposed visit by United States military commanders in Bangladesh.

The party president, Monzurul Ahsan Khan, and general secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim in a press statement said America was trying to increase military operation in South Asia considering its geo-political position.

Referring the press report that three US army commanders will visit Bangladesh, the CPB leaders said the United States was trying to increase their military dominancy in the area for a long time.

The military presence in Bangladesh in the name of regional stability, controlling terrorism, facing threats in the offshore may be threat to the sovereignty of the country, the left leaders said.

The United States opposed the independence of Bangladesh in 1971 and sent Seventh Fleet in Bay of Bengal, they said.

The CPB leaders called on the people to be vocal against any imperialist step of America and called on the Awami League-led government to stop strategic military relation with America.

CPB Called to refrain from signing TIFA

The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) has called on the government to refrain from signing the proposed Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) with the United States.

The party’s president Monzurul Ahsan Khan and general secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim, in a press statement termed the TIFA as controversial and asserted that it is against the national interest.

The US government is putting pressure on the AL-led government to sign the controversial agreement, which was rejected by the people of Bangladesh earlier, said the CPB leaders.

The imperialist US is trying to establish absolute control over Bangladesh and its resources and service sectors, said the CPB’s leaders.

It will be tougher for other countries to invest in the service sectors of Bangladesh if the TIFA is signed, they claimed.

The clauses of the proposed deal are favourable for only the United States. Moreover, if Bangladesh signs the deal it will be isolated from other least developed countries, said the CPB’s leaders.

The BNP-Jamaat government and the military-controlled interim government tried to sign the TIFA deal but backed out because of strong opposition from the left-leaning and progressive political parties.

The CPB’s leaders called on the government to announce the rejection of the proposed deal immediately. Otherwise, the CPB will launch movements to resist the unnecessary, unequal and unacceptable deal with the USA, threatened the CPB’s leaders.

Roundtable on 'National Education Policy-2009'

Call to fast implement after necessary amendments

Academics have termed the proposed education policy as erroneous and inconsistent and urged the government to fast implement it after making necessary amendments.

They were speaking at a roundtable titled 'National Education Policy-2009' hosted by Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) at Moitri Auditorium of Mukti Bhaban in Purana Paltan of Dhaka on October 15, 2009.

Jahid Hasan Chowdhury, assistant professor of political science department at Dhaka University, presented the keynote paper at the roundtable chaired by Professor Safiuddin Ahmed.

The educationists alleged that though the education policy speaks of secularism in line with the constitution, it reeks of compromise with a particular section.

Religion education retains its previous position without much qualitative change in it and English medium education has been completely spared, they alleged.

Former Bangla Academy director general Syed Anwar Hossain said, "Though it was said that the education policy would reflect the spirit of liberation war, it will widen the existing disparity leading to utter chaos in the education sector."

Terming it as a partial draft, he said, "The erroneous and inaccurate policy is not worth implementing."

Bangladesh College and University Teachers' Association president Akteruzzaman said, "The government has turned a deaf ear to the demand of progressive teachers for a modern, scientific education policy of world standard."

Necessary changes to the policy can be brought after launching the policy, he said.
"The reactionary forces will try to shoot down the policy unless steps are initiated to put it in place right now." Professor Rangalal Sen of Dhaka University was highly critical of the proposed education policy.

"It is full of inconsistencies as it does not reflect the economic and political commitment of the government."

"The draft is marked by self-contradiction and it is not possible to dream of universal society keeping discrimination alive."

Professor of Bangladesh Agriculture University Nur Mohammad said, "It is not clear whether it is a programme or an education policy."

He urged the government to start launching the policy focusing on the positive aspects of recommendations and to address the incongruities gradually.

In the keynote paper, professor Jahid called on the government to resolve inconsistencies and self-contradiction by conducting a thorough analysis.

He demanded the proposal on introducing religious education at pre-primary level be cancelled.
BAU professor Asrfuzzaman, Sikhkha Barta editor professor AN Rasheda, among others, spoke at the roundtable.

Raising questions about ’72 Constitution

is tantamount to disowning

 the liberation war: Selim

Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) General Secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim said, “Raising questions about the 1972 constitution and its framing process is tantamount to disowning the war of liberation and Bangladesh's independence”. He
condemned the remarks by BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain over the 1972 constitution, terming it unpleasant and an assault on the spirit of the liberation war.

CPB GS was addressing a joint workers' meeting on October 3, 2009 at Zillur Rahman Municipal Auditorium in Bhairab.

Selim said the 1972 constitution was the direct outcome of the great war of liberation and it was framed upholding the continuity and spirit of the liberation war. The 1972 constitution was framed with four state principles -- nationalism, democracy, secularism and socialism. It was not done with any political transactions or covert consultations.

He said the 5th amendment to the constitution had undermined the spirit of the liberation war, as it axed secularism and socialism- two important state principles. The High Court (HC) judgment declaring illegal the 5th amendment has paved the way for reviving the spirit of the liberation war alongside accelerating the pace of strengthening the democratic system.

If any political party or individual stands against the HC judgment on the 5th amendment, they will be identified as an anti-liberation element by people, he added.

The CPB leader underscored the need for unity among the pro-liberation forcers for implementing the HC verdict.

Presided over by CPB Narsingdi district committee president Abdul Aziz, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by CPB central leader Sajjad Zahir Chandan, Kafi Ratan, Mohammad Hanif, Chandan Saha Roy, Kishorgonj district committee president Sayed Nazrul Islam, Bramhanbariya district committee GS Mahmud Pasha, Narsangdi district committee Acting GS Azimuddin Mastu, Bhairab Upjela committee president Abu Taher Master and youth leader Lokman Hossain.

CPB condemned withdrawal of

free services in Public hospitals

The Communist Party of Bangladesh has protested against the government’s decision to stop free medical services in the public hospitals. Party president Monzurul Ahsan Khan and general secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim, in a press statement, said that the Awami League-led government had made commitments before the election to meet the basic needs of the common people. But instead they are following the path of blanket commercialisation.

They said that depriving the poor people of free treatment in the government hospitals was a reflection of the government’s anti-people policy. The party reminded the government that according to the Constitution it was the responsibility of the state to meet the basic needs of all citizens.

The government is extending the privatisation policy to the service sectors according to the prescription of the multinational companies, they said.

They called on the government to immediately scrap the policy of privatisation of the service sectors.

Govt leases out gas field,

ignoring people's interest : Selim

General Secretary of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Mujahidul Islam Selim has said that the government has leased out three offshore gas fields to foreign companies neglecting the interest of the people of the country.

"When people are waging peaceful movement to protect the interest of the country the government is trying to thwart their movement through torture and oppression. But the government should not forget that torture or oppression cannot stop people from waging movement to protect the country's interest," Selim said while speaking at a rally at Muktangan in the city on September 5.

The rally was organized as part of the  countrywide demonstration programme to realise 7-point demand including reducing the price of essential goods, controlling violent activities, cancelling lease of three offshore gas fields and trial of war criminals.
Demanding payment of all outstanding salaries and bonuses of the garment workers before the Eid, Selim said that the owners of the garment factories have started showing various excuses not to pay salary and bonus of the workers.
"The BGMEA, organisation of the garment factory owners, has demanded Taka 3000 crore to the government to pay for the salaries of their workers. Nowhere in the world there is such instance that the owners of private factories demand money to the government for giving the salary of the workers," Selim said.

Many of the garment factory owners follow the means of tricks and deception before Eid not to pay the salary and bonus of the workers and already they have started the same tricks as the Eid is coming closer, he added.

"Before the start of the Ramzan the finance minister had said many tall talks about keeping the price of essentials under control. But the minister did not keep his word and the prices of consumer goods have gone beyond reach of the people," Selim said.

President of the CPB, Dhaka committee Abdul kader presided over the rally, Central leader Ruhin Hossain Prince, GS of Dhaka committee Ahsan Habib Lablu, Jahid Hossain Khan, Joly Talukder, among others, speak.

Party protests Gas price increase

The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) protested against a further hike in gas prices for domestic and industrial consumption. The president of the party Monzurul Ahsan Khan and general secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim, in a statement said government's decision to increase the prices of gas is imprudent. The prices of essential commodities have gone down a little after the assumption of power by the Awami League-led government. But it is still too high for the common people, whose incomes have not risen proportionally. The increased prices of gas would further augment their suffering.

The CPB leaders said the government is facing a huge loss in gas sector as Bapex is purchasing gas from foreign companies double the price of actual production cost.

CPB has asked the government to capture black money rather than to raise price to development the gas sector. Party leaders called on the government to end corruption and wastage in energy sector.
